Chrome Embraces AI: 3 New Features Transforming Your Browsing Experience
Google Chrome is set to revolutionize how you browse with the introduction of three new experimental generative AI features. Designed to make your online experience easier, more efficient, and personalized, these features are rolling out to Chrome users on Macs and Windows PCs.
AI-Powered Browsing: What's New?
These AI-driven tools aim to enhance everyday browsing tasks within Chrome, building upon previous machine learning integrations like real-time captions, malicious site detection, and webpage summarization. Starting with Chrome M121, the focus shifts towards user-friendly AI that adapts to your specific needs.
Parisa Tabriz, Vice President of Chrome, highlights the goal of making browsing "easier and more efficient" while maintaining a personalized experience.
First, enabling these features requires a few simple steps:
- Sign into Chrome: Ensure you're logged into your Chrome browser.
- Access Settings: Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner and select "Settings.”
- Navigate to Experimental AI: Find and click on the "Experimental AI" page.
Note: These features are initially disabled for enterprise and educational accounts as they are early public experiments.
1. Smart Tab Organization: Declutter Your Digital Life
Do you find yourself drowning in a sea of open tabs? Chrome's new tab organizer is here to rescue you. This feature intelligently analyzes your open tabs and suggests relevant tab groups, automatically creating them for you. This is incredibly useful when juggling multiple tasks like:
- Planning a vacation
- Conducting research
- Online shopping
To use the tab organizer:
- Right-click on a tab and select "Organize Similar Tabs.”
- Alternatively, click the drop-down arrow to the left of your tabs.
Chrome goes a step further by suggesting names and even emojis for your new tab groups, making them easy to identify and revisit. This smart organization dramatically reduces the time spent manually sorting tabs and boosts your overall productivity.
2. AI-Generated Themes: Customize Your Chrome Like Never Before
Following in the footsteps of Android 14 and Pixel 8's generative AI wallpapers, Chrome now lets you generate custom themes using a simple text-to-image diffusion model. Forget complex design software – now you can personalize your browser’s look with just a few clicks.
To create your own AI theme:
- Open the "Customize Chrome" side panel.
- Click "Change theme" and then "Create with AI.”
- Input your desired subject, mood, style, and color.
For example, imagine creating a theme with "aurora borealis" in an "animated" style, evoking a "serene" mood. Chrome will generate several options based on your criteria.

3. "Help Me Write": Your AI Writing Assistant
Struggling to find the right words when writing online? Chrome's upcoming "Help Me Write" feature, launching next month, will assist you in crafting everything from restaurant reviews to formal inquiries. This feature aims to boost your confidence and improve the quality of your online communication.
To use "Help Me Write":
- Right-click in any text box on a website.
- Select "Help me write."
- Enter a few initial words or a brief prompt.
The AI will then generate suggested text to help you articulate your thoughts effectively. Whether you're composing a professional email or a casual social media post, this AI assistant can help you communicate with clarity and precision.
The Future of Chrome: Embracing Gemini and Beyond
Google plans to further integrate AI and machine learning into Chrome in the coming year, including leveraging their new AI model, Gemini, to provide an even faster and more intuitive browsing experience. These developments signal an exciting future where AI seamlessly enhances our interactions with the web.
